Ideal starting domains: financial reconciliation, supply chain exception handling, customer support escalation triage, and procurement approval workflows. These are high-volume, rule-adjacent processes where agents deliver immediate value and where errors are detectable and recoverable.
What Leadership Should Do Now
1. Baseline your data readiness: Agentic AI requires well-governed, accessible data. Run a data readiness assessment before investing in agent infrastructure.
2. Define your governance model: Establish accountability chains, audit logging requirements, and escalation protocols before deploying agents to production.
3. Pick one bounded use case: Resist the temptation to launch five pilots. One well-governed agent in production teaches more than five proofs-of-concept.
4. Build internal fluency: Your team needs to understand what agents can and cannot do. Invest in AI literacy programs targeted at operations leaders, not just technologists.
The organizations that win the next phase of AI adoption won't be those who deployed the most pilots. They'll be those who built the infrastructure, governance, and organizational capability to run agents reliably at scale.
